The Sesriem Canyon was carved into the earth over millions of years by the Tsauchab River. It's 30 m deep and pioneers had to tie six straps (ses rieme) together to get to the water.

You can’t compare the Sesriem Canyon with the Fish River Canyon, but it is also special. This rent right at the entrance of the Namib Naukluft Park is about 1 km long and 35 m deep.

Tour buses stop at Sesriem’s parking area and the tour groups immediately walk down to the canyon floor. But wait first before you do that. Walk left, upstream, and go and find the place where the canyon starts.

You must look and walk carefully, because the watercourse quickly turns into a tear. The one moment it’s still a hard riverbed, but then the course of the Tsauchab falls into a narrow stone gutter into the darkness, six, eight, ten metres through the weathered conglomerate.

After that you can go and do the tourist route and explore the deeper parts of the canyon. If you have time (early morning is the best), drive past the main parking area and take the unclear path that goes further downstream. It ends near the bottom end of the canyon. From there walk up in the canyon to the deeper parts.

Where: The canyon is only 4,5 km from the Sesriem campsite.
